Annual Furnace Inspections For Your Home’s Safety

With winter approaching, now is the time to make sure your furnace is running at peak efficiency for the season!  As the temperatures threaten to drop, it may not be something you consider a requirement if your furnace has been working fine. You may even be wondering if an annual inspection this year is truly necessary.

A great way to look at it is to compare an annual inspection to maintaining your car. If you don’t take care of your vehicle, a lot of things will break down before you realize it. However, like a car, proper maintenance will give you a much longer life on your furnace. By some professional estimates, approximately 75% of all furnace breakdowns in the winter are a result of improper maintenance.  Energystar.gov and Energy.gov both agree that a yearly inspection is absolutely necessary to prolonging the life of your furnace.

In the summer, dirt builds up on your furnace’s internal parts. The buildup causes your furnace to run inefficiently and will ultimately end in higher energy bills. Another common issue is the furnace not receiving proper airflow. Improper airflow places an unnecessary strain on the furnace and easily leads to more repairs and a shortened lifespan.

Yearly cleanings will also keep you and your family safe. Furnaces burn fuel to create heat and this process needs to be precise to maintain efficiency and safety.  A small problem can easily lead to gas leaking into your home or create dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. 500 people die each year and 15,000 people are taken to emergency rooms because of exposure. Don’t take that chance.

Annual maintenance catches problems before they turn into a costly breakdown. While the cost of a yearly tune-up may seem expensive, it’s worth it to ensure that you don’t have a broken furnace on a frigid winter night.

Even with a newer system, yearly servicing is extremely important. Most manufacturers require you to have regular maintenance and to have a record of that maintenance. If something were to happen to your furnace and you needed a warranty claim, the manufacturer may ask you for the records. Without them, your warranty could easily been considered void.
