From powering extensive childcare facilities and aquatics programming to keeping victim services running 24/7 and maintaining Camp Cann-Edi-On, YWCA York’s energy needs span multiple locations and diverse operations. Through their longstanding partnership, Shipley Energy has helped YWCA York optimize utility rates for gas and electric, allowing more resources to flow directly into programs that serve thousands of York County families.

Interview Transcript

My name is Edquina Washington. I’m the Chief Impact Officer here at YWCA York. We do a lot of wonderful things for the community here in York County.

And we have a plethora of programming. We have our child care programming. We are one of the largest child care providers here in York County.

We have our before and after school programming that we call our SAC program. And those are for parents who are working. And we provide care before school and after school so that families can work and take care of all the great things that they need to take care of and know that their children are being well cared for and well nurtured.

We also have our victim services programming. And our victim services programming provides services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking. And we also have under that our community education that goes out and shares about the great work that our victim services programming does.

We also have our racial and gender equity programming here. We provide advocacy. We also provide programming for racial justice and gender equity here at the YWCA York.

We have our aquatics program, which when I’m in the community, I hear so many people say, I learned how to swim at the YWCA York. So we have our aquatics program who has programming for families. We have it for children. And we do services also for individuals that have special needs as well, whatever those individuals may need.

Shipley Energy has been a great partner with us here at the YWCA York. I do know that it has been in the fabric of YWCA York for so many years, prior to myself, prior to our CEO, and I think prior to the CEO, prior to her.

Shipley provides for us assistance with our utility rates with our gas and our electric. And I know we’re looking at some other services that Shipley will be able to provide us with our pool, I believe, up at Camp Cann-Edi-On. Shipley definitely helps the YWCA York do what we do every day, whether that is by partnership opportunities, definitely assisting with our utility rates, just being a community partner with us that we can call on when we need assistance, when we can call on, but definitely assisting with our utility rates and making sure that it is a full circle with the support and services in our community.

The community is very important to who we are here at the YWCA York, and we love to be welcoming to our community. We open our doors to everyone here at the YWCA York, whether it’s a race against racism or whether it’s individuals that just come in the door to have questions. Community is very important because community is all about who we are and all about the work that we do.

We are not YWCA York if we don’t have a community. We’re not YWCA York if we don’t embrace our community, and we’re not YWCA York if we don’t work on empowering our communities. And I believe all our work that we do here is very rewarding, just to see people’s lives be changed and individuals helped, and also just to see smiles on people’s faces every day.
