Four Generations Strong: Shipley Energy Helps Support Brubaker Farms’ Agricultural Legacy

At Brubaker Farms, four generations of agricultural excellence meet modern farming demands. In this Business Spotlight, we sit down with Luke Brubaker, the 2013 Farm Journal Foundation winner and a Lancaster County institution, to discover how 1,800 acres, 400 dairy cows, and 24/7 operations come together… and how managing the fuel demands of such an extensive farming operation requires the right partner.

From powering heavy equipment across over 1,000 acres to keeping dairy operations running around the clock, Brubaker Farms’ fuel needs are constant and critical. Through their partnership, Shipley Energy provides automatic delivery with solar-monitored fuel tanks for essential fuels eliminating the need for manual ordering and ensuring the farm never runs out of fuel during critical operations.

Luke Brubaker: I’m Luke Brubaker of Brubaker Farms, and I’m the second generation of Brubaker Farms. So I do pretty much anything I want to do on the farm to make the farm go. When dad bought this farm here in 1929, his dad told him, my grandpa told him, he said you’ll never make it.

But I have the fourth generation here working on the farm: Mike, Tony, and now my grandson Josh.

This is where I started milking, and I bought dad’s 18 cows here. My boys said, dad, we need to go to 400 cows, and that’s where we started building from there.

Well, one of the hardest things about owning a farm is 24/7 work. There’s never a time that you can say, “well, I’m going to walk away.”

We farm about well over 1,000 acres, probably about 1,800.

Neil Dembeck: Luke Brubaker is an institution in Lancaster County. He’s a man that, you know, when I go around the county and I try to get people to join and support the Farm Bureau, the first name that I mention is Luke Brubaker.

Luke Brubaker: I don’t want to brag about this, but I’m very thankful I was, in 2013, I was the Farm Journal Foundation winner of the United States.

It’s not only on how big your farm is, but if you’re involved with community.

“Atta girl, atta guy, come on.”

And leadership, and being financially responsible in your farming operation.

Greta Lindsley: We at Shipley Energy, we supply Brubaker Farms with their off-road diesel, with their heating oil, as well as their 87 regular gasoline. And he took us around the farm and really got to get a good feel of the connection and the relationship and how we can help them grow.

Luke Brubaker: And Shipley Energy has done some very valuable things for us. We have solar readers on our fuel tanks. I don’t need to call them up. That when we need fuel, they can come and get it. That is a very valuable service to Brubaker Farms.

The community is so important. We want to be the best to our community that we can be.

Thank you, Shipley Energy. You’ve been a great service to us, and we look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you very much.
