Fueling the Thrills: How Shipley Energy Keeps The Buck Motorsports Park Trucking

At the Buck Motorsports Park, high-octane entertainment meets serious operational demands. In this Business Spotlight, we chat with Zane Rettew and Andy Kaiser, the owner/general manager and announcer respectively, who run this 50-year-old family entertainment destination, to discover how demolition derbies, motorsports events, and year-round programming come together on 15 pieces of heavy equipment… and how managing the energy demands of such a fuel-intensive operation requires the right partner.

From powering weekend events to keeping 15 pieces of heavy equipment running and maintaining on-site fuel storage for diesel and gasoline, the Buck’s energy needs are massive and mission-critical. Through their partnership, Shipley Energy has helped the Buck substantially reduce electric costs while ensuring automatic fuel delivery, eliminating product shortages and the stress of running out of diesel mid-event.

Zane Rettew: I’m Zane Rettew. I’m the owner and general manager of the Buck Motorsports Park right here in Quarryville, Pennsylvania. Tonight’s the Demolition Derby and we are super excited.

This is an event we developed last year. It’s actually a Halloween themed event. It’s a trunk or treat.

So not only do we have probably 100 Demolition Derby cars here, they’re all decorated for Halloween. They’re down there giving candy out to all the kids. And I think everybody’s just excited. Everybody loves Halloween. So we’re ready to smash some stuff tonight.

Andy Kaiser: Andy Kaiser, I am the announcer here at Buck Motorsports Park.

Tonight here at the Demolition Derby, you never know what you’re going to see. Different classes of cars, different class of trucks smashing into each other. It’s one comes out the survivor.

You just never know what’s going to happen. Local sponsors, especially ones that have been in the committee for a long time, they’re here to take care of the people. And when you get the service of somebody like Shipley Energy and you get to partner up with the Buck, who’s been around for 50 years, you got these family owned businesses working together, partnering up to bring the best product and service available to our people.

Shipley has been a great partner because, I mean, when you’re dealing with a park here, we’re using a lot of fuel. We have propane needs. We have heating needs.

And the fact that we can make one phone call, that job’s done and we don’t have to worry about it. And we love that reliability.

Zane Rettew: Shipley’s been awesome to deal with. We actually have saved so much money using you guys. We were just going over our electric bill last week and we actually have substantially saved money this year. And with the economy the way it is, you know, every every cent helps.

We get all of our diesel fuel and I’ll tell you what, that’s been another blessing. You know, we were always having demand issues and product shortage issues, but we got a diesel tank and also a gas tank off you guys. And I don’t know how many gallons it holds, probably five or six hundred gallons.

And we like that they’re automatically filled. We never have to worry. We have, you know, 15 pieces of heavy equipment here that drink diesel fuel.

And it’s nice to know that every single weekend, you know, there is nothing more stressful than in the middle of a show running out of diesel fuel when we need heavy equipment to tow vehicles off the track. So it’s just been a great relationship. We have a lot of needs.

Our propane, the electric, the diesel, the gas, it’s been great.

Andy Kaiser: You know, we’ve been here for 50 years now, and it’s just such an honor to be a part of the third generation of ownership here. It’s so rare that you have companies like Shipley and the Buck that our founding principles still remain today.

You take care of the people. You give smiles. You do the best you can.

You preserve that reputation of bringing the quality, of bringing the service, of bringing the entertainment. Knowing that when we get here to the Buck and we all have problems in life, we all have the stress of during the week. We come here and we just, we leave it all at the gate.

And it’s a lot of fun to come here and just be a part of that, to do that for myself, but also to try to be a part of the smiles and the excitement that we bring here. It’s an absolute blast just to turn off and take a mini vacation here with Motorsports.

And we look forward to seeing you at the Buck.

Zane Rettew: We’ll see you at the Buck.
