Tips for Staying Cool This Summer Without Cranking up the A/C

The summer days you’ve waited all winter for are finally here. However, your summer daydreams might have forgotten to include the extreme heat these beautiful days can contain. As you approach the dog days of summer, finding new ways to stay cool can be a challenge, especially if you don’t have an air conditioner or if you want to limit your air conditioner usage.

Fortunately, there are several quick and inexpensive things you can do to stay cool this summer without cranking up the A/C. Here are four tips to cool yourself and your home down.

1. Turn on the Fans

One of the easiest ways to start cooling down yourself and your house is to create airflow from one room to the next. To create a cross breeze with the cooler air in the mornings or evenings, open the windows on opposite sides of your home and place fans facing inward to draw in the cool air. Alternately, you can place a box fan facing outward to draw hot air out of your home during the day.

2. Block out the Heat in Your Home

Beating the summer heat begins with your own home. By keeping the curtains drawn and the shades down, you’re avoiding unintentional sunlight heating through the windows. Close the doors to rooms you don’t spend as much time in during the day to restrict the cooler air to occupied spaces.

Turning on the exhaust fan in your kitchen and bathroom is another great way to pull the hot air out of these areas as well.

3. Hydrate Yourself

Make sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to replace what you’ve lost from sweating. If needed, take a cold shower or bath to lower your core temperature. Placing a cold washcloth or ice pack on your wrists or around your neck can provide some relief from the heat, too.

4. Keep Cool With These Summer Activities

One of the best things about summer is that many of the activities you can do with family and friends can help you keep cool. Visit your local swimming pool, enjoy a frozen treat, or have a friendly water balloon fight. Just remember to wear sunscreen while you enjoy your time outside.
