Halloween Safety Tips

Trick-or-treating is a little over a week away! Soon, the streets will be full of kids going door-to-door to get candy and other goodies from their neighbors. While it’s not a “fun” part of this tradition, staying safe is extremely important. This goes for party hosts, parents, children in costumes, and especially motorists. Everyone needs to do their part to make sure every has a safe and fun night.

The list below has some easy tips to stay safe on Halloween and have a great time.

  • Use electric lights, battery-powered tea lights or glow sticks in jack o’ lanterns instead of burning candles.
  • Carry a flashlight and wear glow sticks/necklaces to ensure you’re seen on the street.
  • Use a flashlight to navigate dark areas and street.
  • Walk in areas and streets that are well lit and free of obstacles to avoid falls.
  • Stay in familiar areas and don’t go trick-or-treating alone.
  • Make sure that any masks don’t block the vision of the wearer.
  • Use reflective tape on costumes and bags to help drivers see you.
  • Move jack o’ lanterns and luminaries to a sturdy table and keep lit flames away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains.
  • Never walk near lit candles or luminaries.
  • Be sure to use marked cross-walks whenever crossing the street. In addition, make sure you look both ways before crossing the street.
  • Any outdoor lights and decorations should be plugged into outlets that have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).
  • If you’ll be away from home or are going to bed, put all of your lights on a timer so that you don’t waste electricity.
