My name is Karlo Gesner. I’m one of the owners here at Ducklings Early Learning Center, alongside with my wife, and I’m also the director of business development. Ducklings is an early learning center located in Landisville just outside of Lancaster by the Penn State Hospital. We are an early learning center, and we really mean that. A lot of people might look at us as a daycare, but daycare really implies babysitting, and we’re really very much focused on early learning in the sense of providing developmentally appropriate education for these young children. Under the age of five is a really, really critical point for children, and children are just really, really, really young human beings and will eventually become adults. Setting up a solid foundation for them developmentally and socially and emotionally really plays into their potential throughout their entire lifetime, and we’re very focused on that.
Our playground is on the newer side. We opted to put in pour-in-place rubber as our flooring, as opposed to mulch, which kids can throw. We also have a gymnasium at the very center of our school. This provides kids with physical activity on rainy days or if it’s too cold or too hot. It’s about a 10,000 square foot facility, so we have a lot of space to take care of when it comes to heating, cooling, just basic energy needs.
Through Shipley Energy, they get us the best prices on electricity. About twice a year, we check in with them. They let us know what the energy market is doing, who reliable suppliers are, and basically advise us and guide us on to getting the best deal on our electric bill. We got acquainted with Shipley Energy through the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, which was crucial for us to join right off the bat whenever we started this business and enterprise. Shipley Energy was on a list of recommended vendors from the Chamber. Once we joined the Chamber of Commerce, one of the sales advisors from Shipley reached out to us as a new business to see if we had any needs whatsoever in regards to shopping for energy costs.
So, Ducklings Early Learning Center has really given us the opportunity to serve this immediate community. With 130 kids enrolled in our center, that’s 260 parents. And you add up all those numbers, including our staff, including our leadership, we’re a small to medium sized community of people all working together. I think that’s the coolest part is, again, thinking long term is that the impacts of the actions, the connections, that we make today are pretty much seeds that are being planted long term for this community.
