Clear vs. Dyed K1 Kerosene

K1 kerosene is the most readily available grade of wholesale kerosene, and the best formulated for commercial heating applications. K2 kerosene, while still used for some purposes, is higher in sulfur and a dirtier-burn than K1.

Another important distinction when buying wholesale kerosene is the difference between clear and dyed fuels. Kerosene is dyed red to differentiate it from gasoline, which is taxed differently. There is no difference in performance between clear and dyed but, if you’re planning on reselling the fuel to the retail market, dyed is the only type that can be legally sold in most areas.

Pros and Cons of Kerosene

Kerosene is an inexpensive fuel source that burns well in cold weather conditions. It doesn’t require pressurization, which means it can be trucked in and stored on-site rather than delivered via the grid. For these reasons, it’s a great choice for use in remote locations. While kerosene produces less harmful emissions than wood or coal-burning heat, it is still a fossil fuel that, when burned, creates nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and other poisonous gases. As a result, great care must be taken when handling and storing it.

Kerosene Availability

Once among the most commonly used heating fuels, kerosene has in no longer favored for home and light commercial use. As a result, it is becoming increasingly hard to find a reliable provider who will deliver to rural locations. At Shipley Energy, we remain committed to delivering wholesale kerosene to anyone who needs it. With a network of suppliers for clear and dyed varieties, we can help make sure you never run out of fuel at a critical moment.
