How does deregulation of the natural gas industry save Pennsylvanians money?
The sale of natural gas is now "deregulated" to many Pennsylvania natural gas customers. This is good news for residential natural gas customers, who can now benefit from the introduction of competition into the sale of natural gas.

Your natural gas distributor charges you a certain rate for the the amount of natural gas you use during each billing period as measured in CCFs (each CCF equals 100 cubic feet.) That rate covers three components: the cost of gathering the natural gas; the cost of transporting it from its source to the local distribution company’s system; and the cost of distributing it to your home.

As a result of competitive buying, companies such as Shipley are now competing for the opportunity to provide the first two components on your behalf.

We use the relationships we have established on the industrial level to bid on the cost of gathering and transporting natural gas in an open, unregulated market. This enables us to purchase and transport natural gas at a more competitive price. We pass those savings on to you.

Meanwhile, the local gas company, because it is a regulated monopoly, is still responsible for the third component — distributing the natural gas to your home.

If I select Shipley to supply my natural gas, how will this change be reflected on my utility bill? The changes will appear under the heading "Current Charges for Residential Service" on your bill. As a Shipley customer, your cost for natural gas will be divided into two line items . The first item will be "Distribution Charges" and will show both the amount of CCF's you used and the rate the gas company charged to distribute that gas to your home. The second item will be "Gas Supply Charges." It will again show the amount of CCF's you used, only this time it will show the amount Shipley charges to supply the natural gas you use in your home.

With Shipley you have a dependable, risk-free opportunity to save money on the natural gas you use in your home. It’s dependable, because you will still always get your natural gas supplied on-demand, hour after hour, day after day. It’s risk free because nothing in the supply system changes: You will still pay only for what you have already used, and you will still have as much natural gas as you need, whenever you need it.

Will I always receive my natural gas?
Yes. With Shipley, you will always get your natural gas supplied on-demand, hour after hour, day after day.

How will I be billed?
If you choose us, you will have all your natural gas charges itemized on your UGI or Columbia Gas bill.

If I switch, won't the utility increase the rate it charges for distributing the gas to my home, therefore offsetting some of the savings?
Because your natural gas utility is still regulated, it will not be able to raise the rate it charges to deliver your gas without receiving approval from the Public Utility Commission.

Do I need a new meter?
    No.

Will the utility still read my meter?
    Yes.

Whom do I call if I smell natural gas near or in my home?

You will still call your local natural gas distributor. If your equipment stops functioning, call us and we’ll dispatch one of our highly skilled technicians.
